Background of the Study
Bush burning is a common agricultural practice in many parts of Nigeria, including Niger State, as a method to clear land for farming. While bush burning can initially improve soil fertility by returning nutrients to the soil, it has negative long-term effects, particularly in relation to soil erosion and agricultural productivity (Gimba et al., 2023). In Niger State, bush burning is widespread, especially during the dry season, and has been linked to the degradation of soil quality, which impacts crop yields and overall agricultural output (Suleiman et al., 2024). The practice destroys vegetation cover, which serves as a natural barrier against soil erosion, leaving the land exposed to wind and water erosion (Usman et al., 2023).

Soil erosion in Niger State has been a significant issue, particularly in areas prone to heavy rainfall and flooding (Buba & Ismaila, 2023). The removal of protective vegetation through bush burning accelerates erosion processes, leading to the loss of topsoil, reduced soil fertility, and, consequently, lower agricultural productivity (Akinwale et al., 2024). This study aims to assess the impact of bush burning on soil erosion and agricultural output in Niger State, exploring the relationship between land management practices and sustainable agricultural productivity.

Statement of the Problem
Bush burning in Niger State contributes to soil erosion, which adversely affects agricultural output by reducing soil fertility and damaging crops. Despite its common use as a farming practice, the long-term consequences of bush burning on soil health and agricultural productivity have not been adequately studied in the region. This study will investigate the impact of bush burning on soil erosion and agricultural output in Niger State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of bush burning on soil erosion in Niger State.
  2. To evaluate the effect of bush burning on agricultural productivity and crop yields in Niger State.
  3. To recommend sustainable land management practices that can mitigate the impact of bush burning on soil erosion and agricultural output.

Research Questions

  1. How does bush burning contribute to soil erosion in Niger State?
  2. What impact does bush burning have on agricultural productivity in Niger State?
  3. What sustainable land management practices can reduce the negative effects of bush burning on soil erosion and agricultural output?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Bush burning significantly contributes to soil erosion in Niger State.
  2. Bush burning negatively affects agricultural productivity and crop yields in Niger State.
  3. Implementing sustainable land management practices will reduce soil erosion and improve agricultural output in Niger State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on regions in Niger State where bush burning is prevalent, with an emphasis on its effects on soil erosion and crop yields. Limitations include difficulties in isolating the impact of bush burning from other environmental factors that contribute to soil erosion.

Definitions of Terms

  • Bush Burning: The practice of setting fire to vegetation, often used in agriculture to clear land.
  • Soil Erosion: The displacement of the topsoil by wind, water, or human activity, which can lead to reduced soil fertility.
  • Agricultural Output: The total production of crops and other agricultural products in a given area.
